There are lots of historians who would say: OK, it’s good to write e-mail and very convenient to use the OPAC for requesting books from library stacks but would never admit that the computer has change the historical research. Theo Kölzer, who isn’t explicitly arguing against the use of computers for historical research, recently said in his presentation at the digital diplomatics conference: The tools have changed – but new diplomatics haven’t emerged: The tools only make the “Diktatvergleich” of Theodor Sickel more easy.
The discussion goes on much longer, and I haven’t read it all yet, but it looks to be worth following and engaging with.
