Job Description There are 3 positions available. These are grant-funded, limited appointment positions with an end date of 6/30/2007.

Perseus is a ten years old evolving humanities digital library, engineering interactions through time, space, and language. The primary goal is to bring a wide range of source materials to as large an audience as possible. Perseus researches how people use the tools and materials in the digital library in order to develop new ways of structuring and presenting information. The Perseus/Classics department anticipates that greater accessibility to the sources for the study of the humanities will strengthen the quality of questions, lead to new avenues of research, and connect more people through the connection of ideas. Perseus/Classics needs an individual with excellent writing and presentation skills, as well as strong programming experience to fill its available Research Programmer Analyst position.

The Perseus/Classics department seeks to add a computational humanist responsible for acquisition and integration of data; developing a decentralized digital library; structuring the department’s data to work with other web services and developing local front end tools (such as interactive timelines and browsers); evaluating language technologies such as machine translation, cross-language information retrieval, automatic summarization and named entity identification within the digital library; and supporting community based collection development.

Required Skills This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Classics and less than one year of experience. An Advanced degree and one to three years of experience are preferred. The selected individual must have substantial experience in at least one area of the humanities: Classics and classical languages are preferred, but the candidate should be prepared to work on a variety of areas. The selected individual must be able to present work and findings in papers and at conferences, and actively participate in on-line discussions driving work plans. The ability to critique ongoing research, formulate strategy, and determine applications useful to meet project goals is essential. Candidates should be able to demonstrate either substantial programming skills or experience suggesting an aptitude to develop such skills while on the job. An area of particular interest is computational linguistics. Candidates must possess working knowledge of PCs, Macs, and UNIX/LINUX workstations. A strong background in Java, C/C++, and Unix is desirable.
