EpiDoc and Digital Classics Workshop

The Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca is offering a week-long training workshop on digital encoding of inscriptions and other ancient texts, taught by Gabriel Bodard, Simona Stoyanova (London) and Polina Yordanova (Sofia). There will be no charge for the training, but participants should arrange their own travel and accommodation.

The workshop will cover an introduction to the principles of XML, EpiDoc encoding of inscriptions and papyri, the use of editing tools such as the Papyrological Editor (papyri.info), morpho-syntactic treebanking, and the encoding of people and places in ancient texts through the SNAP and Pelagios projects.

Participants are not expected to have any technical skills at the start of the workshop, but should bring a WiFi-enabled laptop and be prepared to install some free software before arriving. A good knowledge of ancient history, Greek, Latin or other ancient languages, and epigraphy, papyrology or related disciplines will be assumed.
